Early Season Sports Injuries in Essendon:
Why Small Niggles Matter
At this time of year, we tend to have the same conversation several times a day.
You’ve just started the season.
Training has ramped up.
Games are back.
And something feels” “not quite right”.
It might be a tight calf. A sore knee after matches. A hamstring that keeps grabbing. Or your child mentioning heel pain that only hurts a bit.
Let’s explain why this is so common early in the season.

What’s Actually Happening in Your Body
When a new season begins, training load increases quickly.
You might go from one or two casual sessions a week to multiple structured trainings plus a game.
The intensity increases.
The pace changes.
Movements become more explosive and repetitive.
Muscles, tendons and joints need time to adapt to that load.
If the increase happens faster than tissues can build capacity, irritation develops.
That’s when niggles appear.
This is something we’re seeing across Essendon at the moment, particularly with early soccer and football season, but it applies to any sport where volume and intensity suddenly rises.
Soreness Is Normal. Lingering Pain Isn’t.
It’s important to separate normal post training soreness from something that needs attention.
General muscle soreness that improves over a few days is expected.
What concerns us more is when:
- The pain lingers beyond a few days
- It’s worse the morning after activity
- You change the way you move
- It warms up during the game but returns afterwards
That pattern often tells us the tissue is coping, but only just. If left for weeks, it can tip over into something more significant.
Why Early Assessment Makes Things Simpler
When we see someone early, management is usually more straightforward.
We can adjust training load rather than stop it completely.
We can identify areas that need more strength or control, improve recovery strategies, and support irritated tissues so they settle more efficiently.
Often, it’s not about pulling you out of sport.
It’s about helping your body tolerate the demands of it.
Waiting until pain forces you to stop usually means a longer and more frustrating process.

A Quick Word About Growing Athletes
If you’re a parent, this part is especially relevant.
Growth spurts change how forces move through the body.
Bones lengthen quickly. Muscles and tendons take time to catch up.
That’s why we often see heel pain, knee pain or hip tightness in active kids early in the season.
It doesn’t necessarily mean something serious is happening.
But it does mean their body may need guidance around load, strength and recovery.
Catching it early can help reduce disruption to the season.
When Should You Get It Checked?
If you were sitting in front of us, we’d suggest considering an assessment if:
- The pain has been present for more than a week
- It’s gradually worsening
- You’re repeatedly sore after every session
- You’re changing how you move to protect it
- Your child is starting to avoid training or limping in the mornings after training or games.
Sometimes reassurance is all that’s needed. Other times, a clear and structured plan makes a big difference.
Either way, early clarity tends to make the season smoother.
